Ten, nine, eight, seven, six, five… Then the world exploded. CHAPTER TWO K IRSTIE felt sick with apprehension as they drew nearer to Lucio’s house. It was at his insistence. He had not wanted to continue talking over the phone, nor even in a restaurant, but in his own home, where privacy was guaranteed. A home she was now seeing for the first time. A palatial mansion that screamed wealth! Over the telephone earlier he had yelled so loudly that Kirstie had thought she would go deaf. Anger didn’t even come into the equation.
Where had that come from? No one ever called her daughter that. In fact, Becky hated it. And he opened his arms. Kirstie held her breath. An age went by, and then slowly, cautiously, questioningly, her eyes never leaving those of the man who was her father, Becky walked into them. A huge lump filled Kirstie’s throat. It was a moment she had never thought would happen. She had imagined, if they ever did meet, that there would be an awkwardness between them. Instead Becky seemed more than ready to accept her father.
This man was a workaholic. Why would he need to escape? And the thought of going to some isolated place filled her with fear. ’ she asked, her tone intentionally sharp. ‘Do not fear. There’s a village near by where she’ll not be short of company. ’ she asked, demanding her daughter’s attention. ‘Do you fancy some isolated place in the mountains? ’ asked Becky longingly. Swimming was her favourite hobby. ‘I do,’ he confirmed. ’ Kirstie knew she had lost. Lucio was looking forward to getting to know his new daughter and was glad that she approved of his plans.
